Apropos of recent posts about the (crazy!) number of referee reports some people write, a useful¹ accounting identity: If the average econ paper has ~2 authors, the average² researcher receives twice as many referee reports as she writes.
-
¹ Useful partly—but not only—for highlighting the breadth of professional experience in econ (most Xs and most Ys have high variance and skewness). Also suggests major sample selection in who posts on Twitter about how many reports they write.
-
² This identity is also useful for showing the slipperiness of talking about “averages.” Denominator issues are tricky here of course; the average MUST be properly weighted to be a true statement. Mean(a/b) ≠ mean(a)/mean(b).

How many total referee reports did you receive and write in 2018?
