  1. Advice for PhD students heading into a new school year: Do extracurriculars. My first year I worked ~100% (and took notes! github.com/lukestein/steincoresummary) but almost didn’t recover. I made a pact with econ/polisci friends that we would take hip-hop dance classes if we passed comps… 1/3

      I was a committed but terrible dancer. (Still true.) But grad school fellowships let us take a non-econ class for $0 and it was a way to enforce movement of my brain and body in different ways. By graduation I had also taken tennis, swimming, and emergency medicine classes. 2/3

        I was an imperfect grad student. I have regrets. But counterfactual me who breathed econ every moment of grad school isn’t as happy or as interesting and his work likely isn’t as good. And I passed a class where the final was a D-I basketball halftime show so there’s that too.3/3
