@JustMacro I agree. It’s interesting where different fields have managed to shoehorn in the extended time that’s serving to clear faculty labor markets; cf. postdocs (natural sciences) and non-TT positions/time in PhD program (humanities).

@JustMacro And the question of cui bono varies across these systems. My gut says non-TT/PhD extension benefits institutional budgets; postdocs benefit faculty (PIs) at a broad set of institutions; predoc benefits faculty mainly at a narrow set of institutions.
