By this point we’d already all been exposed to each other’s papers and CVs so knew where to poke. And we had a strong bedrock culture of mutual support. Seminar hazing SUCKS so key to learn to handle it partly through exposure to tough questions you KNOW are well intentioned. 2/3

Finally, part of what I think is PARTICULARLY toxic about seminar hazing culture is the plausible deniability (/gaslighting) that it’s *actually* the kind of well intentioned intellectual inquiry or attempt to “toughen people up” that I’m suggesting practicing. (It isn’t.) 3/3
