          1. Ranking departments by publications (especially without correcting for dept. size) is iffy, but here are a few stats using ASU-collected data wpcarey.asu.edu/finance-degrees/finance-rankings on rankings on three-year publication counts in three “top” finance journals @JofFinance @RevOfFinStudies JFE) 1/5

Ranked by trailing tnree-year JF+RFS+JFE publications, the “top” finance department has been either NYU, Chicago, or Harvard* for the last 17 years. *Rankings are actually by school (not department) though, and Harvard vs. HBS treatment seems inconsistent. 2/5

The number of “top 3 finance publications” required to get into the Top X increased in the first decade of the millennium, but not really in the second decade. Of course, there may be a change in the number of top finance papers going to other journals (e.g., top Econ). 3/5

20 years ago, there were ~100 departments publishing in Top 3 finance journals (at least once every three years). Now there are ≥200. Averaging 1× per year? Top-3-publishing departments doubled from 65 departments → 138. 2×? Doubled from ~40 → ~80. 3×? From 24 → 63. 4/5
