      @prof_cookson I agree that the value of conference discussion is mixed, but I’m generally strongly PRO. And I think discussants tend to be a complement to conference quality (ie most valuable at the best conferences; cf extreme case of FRA.) 1/ @lukestein/1064560873383981056

    @prof_cookson Def Ref2 and/or “I would have written a difft paper” discussions suck. But I think discussants often improve quality of subsequent audience Q&A (and even more importantly lunchtime/drinks chats that follow!) especially given audience members typically haven’t read the paper. 2/

      @prof_cookson And the “this paper is well written” is a cheap-talk pooling equilibrium that winds up wasting time. But so is thanking the organizers, and so much else in life 🤷🏻‍♂️ 3/3
